Chongqing – On November 5th, a press conference took place in Chongqing, focusing on Wushan’s development achievements.
Wushan County in northeastern Chongqing with breathtaking landscapes and rich history, has emerged as a beacon of high-quality development that harmonizes ecological preservation with modern growth. Situated in the core of the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges ecological corridor, Wushan boasts an environment marked by pristine rivers, lush mountains, vibrant red leaves, and a misty climate that adds to its allure. This unique natural beauty and its cultural richness have become a driving force in the county’s ambitious development plans.
Central to Wushan’s growth is its thriving eco-tourism sector. Known as the “Tourism County,” Wushan integrates its heritage and natural assets to attract global visitors. The region’s flagship attractions include the iconic Wushan Three Little Gorges, a premier 5A-rated tourist destination recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the annual Wushan International Red Leaf Festival, which celebrates the county’s 1.2 million acres of red leaf forests. Over the years, innovative offerings such as the large-scale indoor fantasy show Goddess of Wushan and night tours such as the “Light of the Three Gorges” have enriched local tourism, enhancing visitor engagement and contributing to economic resilience. Between January and September 2024 alone, Wushan’s tourism revenue reached approximately 147 billion yuan, reflecting a 20.6% year-on-year growth.
Wushan’s commitment to sustainable agriculture is equally impressive, as it leverages the region’s mountainous topography and fertile soil. The county has developed a robust “3+N” agricultural model focusing on fruit cultivation, herbal medicine, and vegetables. Of particular note is the Wushan crisp plum, which has become a “golden fruit” for local farmers. Covering 30,000 hectares, its brand value now exceeds 34 billion yuan, topping all other plum varieties in China. To further bolster this success, Wushan expanded the product line to include derivatives like plum wine and skincare products, driving economic gains and job creation.
Combining ecological tourism and eco-friendly agriculture forms the backbone of Wushan’s development strategy. By intertwining environmental stewardship with economic opportunity, Wushan has successfully positioned itself as a leader in sustainable county development. As the county continues to build on its strengths, it sets a compelling example of how to achieve prosperity while preserving the natural and cultural wealth that defines its identity.
