Hidden gem for adventure and eco-tourism
Rustaq – The village of Wajmah in Wadi Sahtan, Rustaq in South Batinah, is a remarkable destination for tourists seeking adventure and discovery. Renowned for its unique location and rich biodiversity, Wajmah offers an array of natural and cultural attractions that captivate visitors.
Wajmah has numerous blissful springs and four aflaj – Al Malj, Al Ghail, Al Khatwa and Al Qabil. These aflaj irrigate the village farms, which are spread out on terraces on the steep mountainside. The village is a picturesque blend of old and new, with traditional stone and mud houses standing alongside modern concrete structures, all seemingly suspended in the air.
Highlighting the village’s unique charm, Dr Al Mutasim bin Nasser al Hilali, Director of Department of Heritage and Tourism in South Batinah, said, “Visitors can see old stone and mud houses alongside newly built homes, creating a striking visual of cultural heritage and modernity.”
Among the village’s notable landmarks are its small mosques, sablah, aflaj channels and intricately built agricultural terraces. These features offer visitors insights into an ancient way of life, showcasing how residents adapted to their challenging environment by effectively managing water resources and maintaining connections with neighbouring villages.
Wajmah is also a haven for hiking enthusiasts. Adventurers can explore mountain trails leading to other picturesque locations such as Jabal Shams and Misfat al Abriyeen in Hamra, as well as several other villages in Wadi Sahtan, including Al Fara’a, Al Huwaib, Al Hob, Al Wada’im, Al Naid, Al Ghor and Limbu.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism aims to diversify tourism investments by encouraging small and medium-sized projects that align with local tourism needs.
Hilali informed that with its heritage houses and stunning views, Wajmah is ideal for investment in hospitality and heritage hotels. Restoring and maintaining these structures can attract tourists, generate income for local residents and create job opportunities.
Visitors can reach Wajmah via the Wadi Sahtan road, which branches off from the main road connecting Rustaq and Ibri. The paved road leads to the beginning of a mountain road, after which a 4km dirt road suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles ascends to the village. This route offers stunning views of villages nestled among dense palm oases and diverse geological formations. Another road links Wadi Sahtan to Wadi Bani Auf, facilitating easy access to the many villages in the area.
