Experts at NerdWallet and CNBC reported that certain travel prices post-pandemic have surged, with CNBC saying increases have surpassed current high inflation rates.
Luxury travel booking platform Luxury Link analyzed the change in travel costs in cities across the U.S., comparing prices of airfare, lodging and more in 2019 and 2025. It then ranked these cities by their rising travel costs.

The cost of a four-night stay for a family of four in the Windy City increased by about 10.6% between 2019 and 2025, according to the study. Chicago ranked No. 79 in the list of 100 cities with regard to travel inflation post-pandemic.
The study reported that the cost of round-trip flights increased by 6.4% in Chicago, while meal and lodging costs increased by 21.1% and 8.4%, respectively. Rental car costs remained relatively similar, however, rising by just 0.5%.

The study found that the average cost for a four-night stay in Chicago for a family of four in 2025 was approximately $5,103.

The cost of a four-night stay for a family of four in Peoria increased by about 9.5% between 2019 and 2025, according to the study. Peoria ranked No. 89 with regard to travel inflation.
The study found that the cost of round-trip flights to Peoria actually decreased by 1.9%, while lodging and meal costs rose by 17% and 23.6%, respectively. Meanwhile, rental car costs increased by about 9.9%.
