Traveling comedian, family man Nick Hoff headlines Vail Comedy Show before Father’s Day

Vail Comedy Show is hosting Los Angeles based-comedian Nick Hoff on Wednesday June 11 at The Lookout Bar at the The Westin Riverfront in Avon. Hoff has two comedy specials and has opened for Larry The Cable Guy. Jim Perry, the Cop Comedian, with over a billion social media views will also be performing.
Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?
I’ve done Denver, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins, but this will be my first time in Vail Valley. From what I hear, these crowds are great, so I’m pretty excited to bring my show to town.
Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?
I was able to open for Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy on their “We’ve Been Thinking” tour, so I got to play some huge venues in Colorado. But I think my favorite Colorado comedy memory came years and years ago when I was just a beginning comedian working at Loonees in Colorado Springs. I was staying at the club’s condo, and it was one of my first ever road gigs. I stopped by the club to pick up the key, and I remember feeling like I had finally “made it” in comedy. That was until I got to the condo and the headliner was already there, pensively staring out the window the entire day. Even though he was the main act that weekend, things hadn’t been going his way and he really let me hear about it. I’m pretty sure he quit comedy immediately following those shows.
What do you know about Vail Comedy Show?
I know that it’s Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30 in the Westin Riverfront Resort. I know it’s going to be a fantastic show this month featuring Mark Masters, Jim Perry who has over a billion views on social media, and me, the greatest living comedian of this, or any generation before and yet to come. Not only that, but I’m God-level humble.
Any major events coming up?
I just released my second comedy special last year, and the year before that, I attempted to do shows in all 50 states inside a calendar year. I got to 43 of them, which is pretty close. As far as I’m concerned, Delaware, Vermont, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Massachusets, Connecticut and Wyoming don’t deserve me. As for this year, I’m just at the beginning of my summer tour. Every summer, my wife and kids jump in the van with me and we go across the country, making the most out of life during the days. Then at night, I tell jokes while my wife battles our three kids back at the hotel.

How many years have you taken your wife and kids on the road with you?
My wife is a teacher, so for the last 15 years, when school lets out, she comes on the road with me. Even when my kids were tiny, we’d strap them into the car and head out on the road. Back in 2014, when my oldest son was 6 months old, we were driving through Colorado and a giant storm hit. There was so much rain that I had to come to a dead-stop on the highway. I put on my hazards and looked in the backseat, only to see my son’s eyes the size of dinner-plates. That could have been the end of us, but yet here we are all these years later still trucking along (unlike that headliner in the Springs).
You live in Los Angeles but tour nationally, how does Colorado compare to other markets?
Colorado is a great comedy state. Some of the best clubs in the entire country are in Colorado. I think most cold-weather climates produce the best audiences, because the people can really appreciate jokes. Some warm places are the worst. New Mexico, for example. I’m pretty sure New Mexico is where comedy goes to die.
How would you describe your comedy?
My comedy is like what would happen if your funny friend spent his entire life thinking about ways to make you laugh, and then he curated all of those thoughts and condensed them down to an hour of fun. It’s relatable, but just off-the-wall enough to keep you guessing where the show is going to take you next. On a perfect night, we’ll all be friends after the show.
What is next for Nick Hoff?
Assuming my wife doesn’t run away with some holdover ski bum, we’ll continue down the road, building more family memories, and coming up with jokes to add to the new hour. I really want to take the family white-water rafting while we’re in Colorado. My kids are the perfect age and that would be right up their alley. Maybe something funny will happen along the way and I’ll have the perfect joke to tell later this year on “The Tonight Show.”
Vail Comedy Show will return Wednesday June 18 in Gypsum at Eagle River Brewing with New York City comedian Louis Katz. On July 10 Vail Comedy Show partners with SpeakUp ReachOut on two free comedy shows at the Riverwalk Theater in Edwards, with Dino Archie headlining in English and with Carlos Santos in headlining in Spanish.
