The 2024 Parents Family Travel Awards
Traveling with your kids can be one of the most rewarding and memorable things you do as a family, but it can also be stressful. Whether your kids are toddlers who still nap or tweens with varied interests, there are so many factors to consider when planning the ideal trip. That’s why we started the Parents Family Travel Awards.
To save you some precious time, we’ve done the research to curate a list of 37 destinations that should suit most families. We talked to family travel experts, Parents editors, and (most importantly) real world parents to get the scoop on what they look for when traveling with kids.
Some things we considered were which properties offered specific features like accessibility, kid-friendly activities, location (because no one wants to travel further than they have too, especially with small children), and entertainment options. From amazing all-inclusives to chic but still family-friendly urban hotels—and everything in between—these are the winners of the 2024 Parents Family Travel Awards.
Happy travels!
We understand that traveling with kids involves planning, prep, and logistics aplenty. But don’t let that deter you. On the other side of wherever you’re going is the opportunity to watch your children bloom in real time as they discover all the world has to offer. With that in mind, we compiled a list of the best destinations for families in the U.S. We hope it’ll inspire your next trip with the people you love most. You don’t even have to buy us a souvenir as a thank you.

The TWA Hotel: Queens, New York
Plane aficionados will flip over The TWA Hotel that’s located right at JFK airport in New York City—and architecture-loving adults will adore the stunning mid-century design by famed architect Eero Saarinen. Not only will you get to watch dozens of planes take off (and land) all day long, but both kids and parents will love exploring all the nooks and crannies of this retro hotel, including vintage flight memorabilia exhibits and a cocktail bar in an old cockpit. There’s even a Jetsons-esque cafe inside by celebrity chef Jean-Georges that serves buttermilk pancakes and bacon with a side of spectacular plane views. The hotel has direct access to the airport, making it an ideal place to stay during a long layover (or, if you’re local, a fun staycation.)
“My kids adore this hotel,” raves one parent. “The futuristic design makes the whole hotel feel like a spaceship. There’s a bar in a real old airplane, endless space for running around, a rooftop pool overlooking the runway, and an entire room dedicated to the game of Twister.”
Park Lane New York: New York, New York
Visiting the Big Apple with a larger family and staying in a hotel can often be challenging. That’s why we love Park Lane New York for their luxurious and spacious room and suite offerings that comfortably accommodate four people. Amenities like 24-hour in-room dining is helpful for parents who don’t want to trek out and spend time waiting to feed hungry bellies.
The location, across from Central Park, can’t be beat—whether you want to hit up the Central Park Zoo, carousel, ice skating rink in the winter, or just need wide green space for little ones to get the wiggles out. You can walk or stroll practically all over the city or hop on the subway at one of the various stops, which are just a block or two away in any direction. And, for those with older kids, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall and the Museum of Modern Art are all a short (less than 20 minute) walk away.
Mohonk Mountain House: New Paltz, New York
If you’re trying to do something near New York, but out of the city and with stunning nature all around, you can’t go wrong with Mohonk Mountain House. Booking a stay here means all your food (including meals and snacks) and a wide variety of activities like boating, swimming, kids camps, and more are included, making it a million less things for you to plan and budget for. The price per night will be higher than traditional hotels, but when you take into account that it includes everything you can think of in one fell swoop, we think it’s well worth it.
“Mohonk Mountain House is a great value, especially for families,” one parent says. “The resort offers an all-inclusive experience that makes it [really] stand out. When you book a stay, meals, snacks, and a wide range of activities… are included. This can save [families] a lot of money, as there’s no need to constantly budget for extra costs or activities. The resort also offers a variety of family-friendly activities, from nature walks and educational programs to kids’ camps.”
Set in an old Victorian castle, which is pretty cool in and of itself, the property overlooks the stunning Lake Mohonk and boasts spacious rooms that are truly accommodating for families. There are pools (including an indoor heated pool), stables with horses, pedal boarding, archery, tennis courts, an ice rink, snow tubing, s’mores roasting, afternoon tea, yoga classes, and so much more for every member of the family. In the summer, there’s even a drop-off kids club that’s included in your package so parents can even slip away for some adult time while the kids are entertained, making it—dare we say it—a real vacation.
Winnetu: Edgartown, Massachusetts
A quintessential Martha’s Vineyard beach vacation becomes a breeze at this upscale resort. There are also complimentary children’s activities everyday that families can take advantage of.
Families will also appreciate that the property has an ample amount of first-floor room options, which is super convenient if you’re toting a stroller. Many rooms and suites also have mini kitchens, which are ideal when traveling with young children for heating up food, refrigerating breast milk, and having all their snacks on hand. Families can even opt to rent a townhome or duplex on the property for even more space.
“[This] resort… has everything you could possibly want for a great family vacation,” one traveler says, “from bikes, [a] pool, beach, exploring, fishing, tons of kid activities, and great food. Also the room configurations are perfect for families of all sizes.”.

With nine shows a week, ranging from Broadway-style musicals to chamber music and even opera, there’s a show for every member of the family performed by talented staff, many of whom have gone on to perform on Broadway and in famed operas near and far. The resort is known for families returning during the same week year after year, creating a lifelong family tradition.

The ski valet is super convenient for families who are already hauling way too much stuff, and even the littlest member of the family can take beginning ski or snowboard lessons. Wind down in one of the heated pools with some hot cocoa afterwards.
There’s a wide variety of family-friendly activities during the daily seasonal programming—“Build-a-Buddy” workshop, family snow golf, and a Ben and Jerry’s Tour are definitely kid-pleasers, And maybe if you’re lucky, you can even sneak away to their Spa and Wellness Center for some R & R—or utilize the Kids Club for an additional fee to squeeze some adult time in by the roaring fire.

Basically, more fun than they’ll know what to do with.
“My kids, 11 and 5, adore Great Wolf Lodge,” one parent says. “Living 90 minutes from the Poconos, we have been there a few times, and each trip is just as special as the next. The waterpark is fun—and always eventful. Bowling is enjoyable for my youngest and my oldest, and both kids love running around collecting treasures and playing MagiQuest.”
As for the rooms themselves, they have recently been redone—and are equally as magical. Guests can choose from a variety of options, including the “standard” family suite, a fireplace suite, and the ever-popular wolf den suite. Each is designed to sleep no less than four to six individuals. Rooms come with a minimum of two queen beds, a sleeper sofa, mini fridge, in-room microwave, and full bath—making it easy to detangle knots after a day in the waterpark. A weekly luau and fun character breakfast really take it up a notch, and if your little one is still into dressing up, you can even book them a magical makeover at the salon—pixie dust and all.
Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa: Anaheim, California
Families heading to Disneyland often want to stay nearby, and while there’s a wide variety of kid-friendly hotels (including other Disney properties) in the area, we love Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, as the destination marries upscale details for adults with signature Disney touches for littles—even without the theme park hoopla. One of the best perks of staying here? Hotel guests get early access into the parks from a dedicated entrance so you can skip the crowds and enjoy a blissfully empty Disneyland or California Adventure Park—at least for a few hours. You can also easily nip back if someone needs a nap.
Parents will appreciate the beautiful California craftsman details all over the property while little ones will love finding hidden Mickey’s and jumping into the massive pool after hours in the parks. Just down the road, guests can go canoeing, visit the Maui Ocean Center, or swim at Black Rock Beach.
Tenaya at Yosemite: Fish Camp, California
As one parent shared, you don’t want to go all the way to Yosemite only to have to spend hours with bored kids waiting to drive into the National Park because you stayed too far outside. Tenaya is conveniently located near the park’s south gate, making it easy to go in and explore, then come back to relax in a grand family-friendly resort. Details like in-room cribs, a family game room, dive-in movies during the warmer months, and s’mores by the firepits are all designed to create lasting core memories. Families can even take a brief tour through the forests of Yosemite on a vintage logging steam train.
Kid-friendly programming during the week means they could go snowshoeing one day and make arts and crafts the next. Stay in a traditional room/suite, lodge, or log cabin for a real “in-the-woods” feel.
The Flamingo Resort & Spa: Santa Rosa, CA
If you’ve always dreamed of traveling to Sonoma County (aka wine country), but weren’t sure if it was doable with kids, wonder no more. The decidedly hip historical mid-century hotel in the heart of Santa Rosa is as great for kids as it is for adults. According to one parent, “The Flamingo doesn’t market itself as a family-friendly resort, but we loved our stay there. The suites were spacious and well-designed and easily accommodated four people. Ours was steps away from the huge swimming pool; there are also lawn games and great food options, with plenty of picnic chairs and tables for informal outdoor meals.”
And yes, childcare services are available for a reasonable hourly rate so you can partake in complimentary tastings through their Flamingo Flights program at some of the local nearby wineries.
Club Wyndham at Steamboat Springs: Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Head to the Rocky Mountains with the kiddos to hit the slopes in the wintertime or hiking and biking in the summer at Club Wyndham at Steamboat Springs. Indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, a sauna, and game room ensure everyone is entertained. Located just minutes from the Steamboat Ski Resort, the resort is also close to Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Yampa River Botanic Park, so there’s no shortage of places to explore.
“The room amenities make this a great value because suites have kitchenettes that are perfect for cooking meals. My family found this especially useful for making a warm breakfast before hitting the slopes,” one parent says. “Our stay also included free transport to and from the slopes and around town, which can quickly get pricey otherwise. Suites have separate bedrooms for parents and kids, and a cozy living room setup with TV and fireplace. Plus, when you’re a family of skiers, all the gear takes up a lot of space so it’s nice to be able to spread out.”
Best Cruise Lines
Disney Cruise Line
If you ask people “what’s the best cruise line for families,” someone is bound to say Disney Cruise. With varied destinations, cruise lengths, and—of course—plenty of magical touches (not to mention excellent customer service), Disney Cruise Line offers an amazing experience for new and seasoned travelers.
Their boats, while different, have a wide variety of onboard activities—including numerous pools, waterslides, Broadway-style shows, and a supervised kids club (with different rooms geared to children of different ages). Dining options are abundant and superb. Each restaurant is themed—and many are interactive, coming alive at mealtimes. And their staterooms have a variety of family-friendly features, including separate sleeping and seating areas, under-bed storage, and split bathrooms.
“As a parent of teenagers, it’s difficult to find a destination where we can all truly disconnect, leave our phones behind, and do all things that we like—both together and separately [but] last summer we took a cruise to Alaska and all of us agree that has been the best vacation ever,” reveals one parent. “At the end of the day, whether we were together or apart, we all sat down to dinner to share everything we’d done. There’s also a ton of onboard entertainment, several pools, character meet and greets, and fireworks at sea. I can’t say enough good things about Disney Cruises.”

Whether you’re trying to plan a multigenerational trip or just traveling with the kids, Royal Caribbean cruises have something for everyone. Kid-friendly dining options, adults-only premium options, and even a full-on hibachi restaurant on some ships make it easy to customize the trip to your family’s wants and needs.
Their popular kids club will keep kids as little as six months old engaged and entertained so parents can check out some of the more grown-up activities—or just lay out on the deck for some R & R. “We recently got to embark on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, the Wonder of the Seas, and my kids, ages five to 13 still can’t stop talking about it almost half a year later,” says one parent. “There was evening karaoke, an escape room, ice skating, zip lining, amazing acrobatic performances, and even a carousel on board that they could ride whenever they wanted, and that’s just a fraction of the activities they participated in—it was incredible.”
Carnival Cruise Lines
Non-stop entertainment, 24/7 pizza, and affordable pricing are just some of the factors that draw families to Carnival cruise line. From mini golf and rope courses to water slides and more, there’s no shortage of fun to be had. Their signature kids clubs are available for cruisers starting at age two, allowing families the flexibility to spend time together or split up—so everyone can enjoy the day how they want to.
A “Seuss at Sea” program adds whimsical fun with parades and storytime for little ones starring recognizable characters from some of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. For port days, there are shore excursions that cater to families, and the rooms have several clever arrangements like a bunk that comes out of the ceiling. Some rooms are even able to comfortably fit up to five people. Whatever plan you decide on, it’s sure to be a cherished vacation at sea they won’t want to come home from.
Best Nationwide
Marriott
“I feel that, as a major chain, Marriott is very family-friendly,” says one family travel expert. “Room rates are reasonable and I earn points for staying. Many have free breakfast, pools and exercise rooms. Some have pools, lazy rivers, kids clubs, sports, and other similar amenities. And many properties are centrally located and offer various on-site dining options.”
With over 8,700 properties all across the globe, it’s never hard to find a Marriott (or two!) that suits your family’s particular needs and budget, and it’s nice to always know what to expect when they book a stay at one of their hotels.
Hilton
Hilton is a go-to brand for many families for affordability, convenience, and quality. Many properties feature spacious family suites, kids’ menus, and pools, while Hilton brands like Embassy Suites offer complimentary breakfasts and evening happy hours, while Homewood Suites provide fully equipped kitchens, perfect for families who prefer to cook. Hilton resorts often include kids’ clubs, organized activities, and family-friendly packages—not to mention free cookies.
For parents, convenience is key and the fact that there are over 7,400 Hilton’s around the world means you’re likely to be close to major attractions, beaches, or city centers. Whether it’s a quick weekend trip or the big annual vacation, Hilton properties make traveling with kids seamless.
Westin
For families seeking a touch of luxury on their family vacations at non-astronomical prices, the Westin properties are the way to go. Thoughtful details for kids are clear right from the start: at check-in at most locations, children are given a Westin Family Travel Journal and a Local Activity Guide full of engaging activities. Some properties also have a kids club, dedicated kids pool or water slides, and various on-site dining options making it easy to find things to do and eat.
Families can also look into booking a Westin Family Package which gives them the opportunity to enjoy up to 50% off their second room with connecting rooms—ideal for multigen travel or if you’re traveling with teenagers. To add even more value, kids eat for free from the Westin Eat Well Menu for Kids, available at many locations.
How We Chose Our Winners
- Firsthand Visits. We asked Parents editors, family travel experts, and real world parents to nominate the top places they’ve visited this year, ensuring the properties on this list were truly parent-approved.
- Fun Activities. Part of the challenge of traveling with kids is making sure they’re engaged and entertained enough to, let’s be real, not whine about being bored. All of the properties on this list have ample daily programming and on-site amenities (or are in close proximity to major sites) to keep them as busy as you want.
- Tasty Dining Options. Ensuring all of the members of your family are fed—from sun up to well after sun down—can be tricky while traveling, especially if you have a picky eater or have someone in your party with more refined tastes. But whether you are looking for casual fare or a fine dining establishment, most of the properties on this list boast on-site dining options.
- Unique Rooms. Traveling with kids—especially those who still nap—is all about making sure you have the right setup so everyone is comfortable, has a bed to sleep in, and ideally, no one has to crawl around in the dark. Properties that offered flexible set ups, suite options (with doors!), and kid-friendly bunk beds moved higher on our list.
- Varied Operating Hours. Kids (and adults) wake up early no matter what time zone they’re in—especially if jet lag is a factor. We considered places that offered options with early operating hours for things like caffeine and that bleary-eyed breakfast fix that families may be looking for.
