Amaravati: From Buddhist legacy to the modern capital of Andhra Pradesh
An important Buddhist site initially, Amaravati later flourished as the capital of the Satavahanas and Pallava dynasties. Emperor Ashoka (269-232 BC) commissioned the construction of a monastery and a stupa here, which stands as a testament to the city’s Buddhist heritage. The Amaravati stupa, adorned with exquisite carvings depicting the life of the Buddha, is considered one of India’s most prominent Buddhist sculptures. It is also known for the Amareswara Temple dating back to the 2nd century, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Modern Amaravati emerged in 2014 when the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) proposed it as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh after the state’s bifurcation with Telangana. Development stalled after the 2019 elections, temporarily leaving Andhra Pradesh without a capital. While Hyderabad served as the joint capital of both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the former state has a new capital now in the form of Amaravati with TDP back in power after the 2024 elections.
The Indian government’s commitment to Amaravati’s development is further underscored by the allocation of INR 15,000 crore in the 2024 Union Budget, announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 23, 2024. Additionally, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu confirmed Amaravati’s status as the sole capital before his swearing-in ceremony, signifying a clear vision for the city’s future.
